Desperate Measures

Written by | 2 Comments

This little family just got hit with a nasty 24 hour bug. Urghh. The worst is over now though, and we’re slowly starting to eat solids and feel a bit better on our feet.

Last Friday Ivan and I took a much needed road trip to Alamos. It was a spur of the moment thing, fueled by the fact that we have another few days to wait until our visa interview and this heat plus lack of things to do here is driving us nuts. So we hired a car for the day, left Mika with her grandma and drove for 2 hours to Alamos for a very good breakfast. We played a long scrabble game, talked about our wedding and drank a couple cups of pretty good coffee before jumping back in the car and driving home again.

It wasn’t so much for the breakfast that we did the trip. It was for everything. For the 2 hour drive with no baby, for 7 hours of just Ivan and I, for the excitement of being somewhere new (even if only for a few hours) and for sitting in a beautiful tranquil setting for 3 hours together. It was just what we needed.

The place is in Alamos and is called Teresita’s. It’s super cute as you can tell from these pictures!

Mika was perfect for her Grandma. She napped, she played, she ate and she was super stoked to see us when we got home. Oh, in other news…Mika is starting to walk! Her record so far is EIGHT steps! I’m kinda embarrassed to say that I almost cried the first time she did it. I have no idea why, but it just feels so…momentous. This is IT. This is huge. She’ll never be a little crawling baby ever again. I’m so proud and excited, but clearly also a little bit teary at the thought of it all :)

a new year a new site

Written by | 3 Comments

There is nothing more satisfying than designing and building a new website in one weekend.

One Saturday morning it was raining and so Ivan and I walked in the rain with our raincoats to a beautiful French cafe in Remuera (Le P’tit Pyrenees) where they greet everyone with ‘bonjour!’ and speak in the most adorable French accents.  We sat outside and sipped coffee and ate our breakfasts whilst completing a crossword or two.  Then we got down to website-business and planned our new site.

The rest of the weekend was pretty much spent entirely on getting this site finished.  With baby on the way (in only SEVEN DAYS) I really really wanted it to be complete and beautiful so we can start adding images and videos and such.  Obviously there are still a few things that can be tweaked, but by 1am last night we decided those little things can wait.

If you find anything drastically wrong, annoying, not working (or awesome) within our site, then please let us know so we can fix it.  If you dislike change, then I am sorry – but you will soon not even remember that this site was anything but this.  Who can actually remember what the old Facebook looked like?  Not I.

(Here are our incredible breakfasts from Saturday morning)

not a morning for oats.

Maybe it’s because I’m pregnant (it’s not) but lately I’ve been dreaming about croissants. I haven’t been dreaming of them so much at night time (that’s reserved for extremely strange vivid dreams about tigers and death) but more so during the day. When I think (or dream) of croissants I can think of only good things to associate with them.

  • Crosswords
  • Coffee
  • Marketplaces
  • Mornings
  • Music

And so (as we often did in Vancouver) I love strolling through market places on a lazy morning, soaking up the smells and enjoying live music, waiting for a little cup of coffee and then completing a crossword.

I am, in fact, wildly passionate about wholesome breakfasts.  Breakfasts that involve grains or nuts or yoghurt or fruit. I’ve been known to instantly dislike people based on whether or not they take breakfast-time seriously. And so I am aware that croissants do not really fit into this wholesome breakfast category.  Yet somehow they still manage to tug tenderly on my heart strings and my taste buds simultaneously. What’s that? It’s croissant day? Ok… I’ll forgo my wholesome grains, seeds and fruit for a lazy morning of crosswords, coffee, market places and croissants.

This morning was no special morning however I awoke to a warm croissant and a cup of black coffee by my bedside table.

To my beautiful, warm-hearted boyfriend who always kisses me like it’s the first time and who surprises me on any given morning with a warm croissant and a cup of hot black coffee – I love you.
